Smart data capture should be a commodity
Scanning a barcode is a solved problem, yet shipping a scanner that is fast, polished and cross-platform still takes weeks or an expensive license. QRGen packages the best open engines (zxing-cpp, Apple Vision, ML Kit) behind one consistent, well-documented API with a real UI, so anyone can ship it in an afternoon.
Rockyljewell
QRGen was created by Rockyljewell and is developed in the open on GitHub. It's free for everyone under the Apache License 2.0. If you build something with it, keep the NOTICE with your app and, if you'd like to say thanks, add a "Powered by QRGen" link or share the project.
What we believe
Private by default
Camera frames, images and ID data are processed on the device. QRGen has no analytics, no telemetry and no phone-home license checks.
Open all the way down
SDKs, UI components, parsers, docs, Agent Skills and this website live in one Apache-2.0 licensed repository.
One contract
Every platform follows the same specification for symbology ids, options, results, parsers and the REST API.
Built for agents
Agent Skills, llms.txt and a copy-paste prompt help coding agents integrate QRGen on the first try.
Honest about limits
Beta packages are labelled beta, and the docs say what has been tested on devices and what hasn't.
Standards first
GS1, AAMVA, ISO/IEC symbologies. We implement the standards instead of inventing formats.
Your camera feed stays yours
The web SDK decodes frames in a Web Worker inside the page. Native SDKs use the operating system's on-device vision frameworks. Nothing is uploaded unless your app sends it somewhere.
- No network requests besides loading the SDK and its wasm (which you can self-host)
- No cookies, analytics or fingerprinting in the SDK
- Strict CSP compatible (worker-src blob: or main-thread fallback)
- Report vulnerabilities privately through GitHub security advisories
Standing on great shoulders
QRGen builds on zxing-cpp and zxing-wasm, Apple Vision, Google ML Kit, CameraX, VisionCamera, mobile_scanner and ZXing.Net. QRGen is independent and not affiliated with any commercial scanning vendor.
